Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia, feminine breast enlargement in men. The word is formed from the Greek words γυνή gyne (woman) and μαστός mastos (breast). Although the cause is not known exactly, it is thought that there may be more than one cause. It is generally thought to be caused by an imbalance in sex hormones. Gynecomastia, which is observed in adolescent boys, disappears within a few years in the majority of cases.

Although it does not pose any health hazard, in rare cases it may be an indication of a different disease that may threaten health. It often causes social and psychological problems.

If the cause of gynecomastia can be determined, treatment for it can be applied. However, in many cases, the treatment is surgery.

Types of gynecomastia
There are three main types: glandular, mixed type, lipomatous.

While real breast tissue provides growth in the glandular type, it creates an increase in adipose tissue in the lipomatous type. In the mixed state, there is both an increase in breast tissue and an increase in adipose tissue. Usually, we encounter mixed type.

Treatment
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast more than normal. Although the growth in the breast tissue is rarely before puberty, it most often occurs after puberty.

Examination and, if necessary, radiological examination are performed in patients presenting with breast enlargement.

The causes of gynecomastia are different. Hormone imbalances are the most common cause. Hormone drugs taken, tumors of endocrine origin, testicular development disorders are other causes of gynecomastia.

During puberty, 60-70% mammary gland enlargement occurs in boys, but this is not remarkable. It disappears within 6 to 18 months and the breast returns to its normal size.

Gynecomastia changes are present in 40% of adult men, this growth may be unilateral or bilateral.

As a surgical treatment method, liposuction and removal of the mammary gland are the most suitable techniques. These treatment methods vary according to the breast examination findings.

Good results are obtained with the liposuction method in patients with large amounts of adipose tissue in the breast tissue. In patients with excess adipose tissue and excess mammary gland, the breast tissue should be removed with liposuction.

If there is excess skin in addition to excess fat and breast tissue, the skin is removed together with the removal of fat and breast tissue. Bandaging is applied for 3 weeks after the operation and the patient is called for monthly control.

Gynecomastia Surgery When liposuction is performed, there is no surgical scar because the procedure is done through small holes.
